About the show...

Step inside Christmas 1843 for a wonderfully different telling of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Gather around the tables of our cosy Eco Barn as our Victorian tavern hosts get their hands on a curious new book, just arrived from London...

Watch the familiar tale unfold all around you as Ebenezer Scrooge is swept through Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come in Theatre on the Farm's intimate new adaptation, filled with storytelling, music, laughter, magic and festive cheer.

Sing carols together, raise a glass with the Ghost of Christmas Present, join the festivities at Fezziwig's party and enjoy games and entertainment around the tables, all while tucking into a Victorian-inspired sharing supper included in your ticket.

Expect British cheeses, ham, pork pie, bread, chutney and fresh fruit, followed by mince pies and Christmas cake.

Funny, atmospheric and full of heart, this is A Christmas Carol turned into a proper festive night out: part play, part Victorian tavern entertainment and part feast.

With only a limited number of seats at each performance, the story happens right amongst you.

This December, don't just watch the story.
Pull up a chair and become part of it.

What to Expect

ARRIVE AT THE HOLLY & IVY TAVERN

From the moment you enter the Eco Barn, you'll be stepping into Christmas 1843.

Take your place around the tables, order a drink from the bar and settle in amongst candlelight, greenery, music and Victorian tavern entertainment. Our hosts will already be waiting to welcome you.

YOUR SHARING SUPPER

Food is part of the experience. Your ticket includes a Victorian-inspired sharing supper, with British cheeses, ham, pork pie, bread, chutney and fresh fruit, followed by mince pies and Christmas cake. Sharing is at the heart of our telling of A Christmas Carol, so the supper is designed to be passed around and enjoyed together as the story unfolds.

Vegetarian and gluten-free alternatives can be provided when requested in advance. Please see our FAQs below for information about allergies and dietary requirements.

THE STORY UNFOLDS

This isn't a conventional sit-back-and-watch production. The story happens around the tables and amongst the audience, combining Dickens' much-loved story with live performance, music, games and Victorian entertainment. You might find yourself singing a carol, raising a glass with the Ghost of Christmas Present or joining the celebrations at Fezziwig's party. Audience participation is always good-natured and there will be no pressure to take part if you'd rather simply enjoy the action.

Your ticket includes the full performance of A Christmas Carol and a Victorian-inspired sharing supper. Drinks are not included and will be available to purchase separately from the Theatre on the Farm bar before, during and after the show.

Food will be served on communal sharing platters around your table for you to enjoy together. Sharing is one of the central themes of our production, so eating together isn't simply an added meal. It forms part of the experience and the world of the show.

Yes. Vegetarian and gluten-free alternatives can be provided when requested in advance. When booking, simply select the appropriate food option for each guest who requires an alternative so that we know exactly how many to prepare for.

Our supper is served on communal sharing platters, with suitable alternatives provided where required. If you have coeliac disease, a food allergy or intolerance, please see the separate allergy information below and contact us before booking.

Because the supper is served on communal sharing platters, food is prepared and served in an environment where allergens are present and cross-contact may occur. If you have a food allergy, intolerance or coeliac disease, please contact Theatre on the Farm before booking so that we can discuss your requirements and what we can safely provide.

Seating is provided around shared tables and we will allocate your seats for you before the performance. Wherever possible, everyone included within the same booking will be seated together around the same table. If you are booking separately from friends or family that you would like to sit with, please let us know when booking and we will do our best to seat your parties together. Please don't swap or move seats yourself when you arrive. Seats and tables have been carefully allocated for a reason, including party sizes, dietary requirements, access needs and the way the performance takes place around the room.

While we are usually happy to welcome dogs on leads to our outdoor performances, this production takes place entirely indoors and food is served throughout the experience. For this reason, we're unable to accommodate dogs at A Christmas Carol. Thank you for understanding and for leaving your four-legged theatre critics at home for this one! 🐾

A Christmas Carol has been created as an adult festive night out, rather than a children's or family show.

Children are very welcome to attend, and there is no specifically adult content, but the style, length and atmosphere of the evening have been designed with an adult audience in mind.

For families looking for something created especially for younger audiences, we'd recommend our other festive family performance instead.

The Eco Barn has toilet facilities inside. There is a step up into the barn, so if you or a member of your party has any access requirements, please contact us before booking and we'll be very happy to discuss how we can best accommodate you.
